Last Day

Today is our last day in Africa!

This whole holiday has been amazingly AWESOME!!! Although I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again and not have to live out of a suitcase (exspcialy since i have a new wardrobe waiting for me :P ).

I miss my mum and all my friends and I can't wait to see them all but I will also miss Africa and my family over here.

The next time I post something I will be back in Australia, the country I call home.

Day 19

Monday I woke up with heaps of mosquito bites, the only time I had been bitten this whole holiday. We had breakfast at 8.00 and again it was a buffet and again we ate too much.

After breakfast we packed our bags, put them in the car and walked over to where the Canopy Tours were. The Canopy Tour was a series of 10 flying foxing zigzagging down a gorge and was awesome.

We were driven up to where the first slide was, we were in full body harnesses, and we were attached to the cable, suspended over the trees, and slid down the cable to the next platform. The last 4 slides we had to brake ourselves. Jaylin was really scared at the start but by the end she wanted to do it again. We all did.

The guys leading the tour were full of interesting trivia and bad jokes and made it all lots of fun. The worst bit was having to drive another 2 hours to get back to Johannesburg.

We didn’t do much once we got back to Jen’s all Jaylin, Jayne and I basically did was just play card games.

We had spaghetti for dinner and got back to Observatory around 8.00 and slept.

Day 18

Sunday morning we went to church with Jen and Jaylin. After church we went back to Jen’s for a bit and then went to the Rosebank market.

I didn’t buy much, dad spent the most though. If we had more time to walk around I probably would have brought more, but we had to get back if we wanted to get to Sparkling Waters (a resort in the mountains outside of Johannesburg, further out than the Ingwe Bush camp we stayed at, and the starting point for the Canopy Tour) before it was late.

We packed our stuff and put it in the car and drove for 2 hours to get to Sparkling Waters. We checked in, took our bags to our rooms and got into our swimmers.

The pool was like the size of a town swimming pool, and it had a diving board. It was soo hard to play marco polo because there was only 3 of us in this massive pool so after a while we gave up and started having competitions like who can make the biggest bomb, I won that one every time :P .

At around 7.00, Jen and Dad came and got us so we could get dry and changed for dinner. Dinner was a buffet and we all ate too much, the roast potatoes were sooo good!

We all fell asleep pretty much straight away.

Day 17 - Back to Johannesburg

Saturday morning we packed our bags for the flight back to Johannesburg. We were out of Robins Nest at around 9.00 and headed round to Ivor and Cora’s to say goodbye.

We got to the airport around 10.00 and were on the plane at 10.50. The flight only took about 1½ hours and Jen picked us up from the airport. We dropped off out bag at 9inObservatory and took whatever need to be washed to Jen’s.

When we got to Jen’s, we jumped on the pool for a bit before we were told to get out and get dry so we could go to the movies. We had a small dinner and went to see Puss in Boots in 3D.

We brought heaps of popcorn and went to our seats right in the middle of the cinema. The movie was great and it was really funny. I don’t want to give anything away but it includes Humpty Alexander Dumpty who is evil, Jack and Jill who are very evil and magic beans. We all had heaps of fun.

We were back at observatory around 8 and went to bed.

Day 16

Friday was pretty relaxed. We left Robin’s Nest at 10 and headed for Somerset West where Grandads oldest friends, Derrick and Lisette, lived.

It took 30 minute to get there and there were drinks and cupcakes waiting for us. After a quick catch-up we hoped in the car and drove to Vergelegen which was built in 16th century for the first governor.

The gardens were beautiful, but the inside was amazing! There were 2 massive dining rooms and 3 ‘lounge’ rooms in the main house and then there was a bedroom wing and a kitchen wing that we didn’t get to see. There were some trees out the front that were absolutely huge!

After walking around there for a bit we went and drove up to the wine farms to have a quick look and we passed a massive strawberry farm as well.

We got back to their house and had lunch around 1 which was delicious, but desert was even better; Juicy, sweet strawberries with sugar on top and ice cream, I couldn’t stop having the strawberries they were so good.

On the way back to Robin’s Nest we took a quick detour to Pinelands to see the house dad lived in for the first 3 years of his life. While he took photos, Jayne and I played on the playground across the road.

We went back to Robins Nest for another swim and then had dinner at Ivor and Cora’s. When we got back to Robin’s Nest we had a quick clean up and went to bed.

Day 15

We started off Thursday by going to Robben Island. Robben Island was mainly a prison and was the prison where political prisoners were sent, including Nelson Mandela.

We were on the boat at 9.30 and the trip took 30 minutes. When we got on the island, we went straight onto buses to start our tour. We drove around the island and stopped for our guide to tell us something about whatever was outside.

He also asked where we were all from so he could tell us our country’s impact on Robben Island. Australia’s impact was the eucalyptus trees, which were actually introduced by the British, and the rabbit’s introduced for food. These are both problems because there are too many rabbits, so they are now pest, and because there are so many of them and eucalyptus trees drink 30 litres of water a day, so there is now no fresh water on the island.

We were also shown these canons that we built for WW2 to protect Cape Town, but they were never used because they were completed 2 years after the war finished.

After we finished the bus tour, we were given a tour round the actual prison. There was one part where we went in a section where the stories of the inmates were on the inside of their cell and we went in and read them, it was really interesting.

We were back on the boat by 12.30 and the trip back was really rough. We had fish and chips for lunch and walked around the shops. I brought a bag for 220 rand (about $30) and a really cute gecko for 5 rand (70 cents) plus some other things.

We went back to Robin’s Nest for a swim and got some pizza before Ivor and Cora picked us up to go see Phantom of the Opera. It was great, but it was really loud at times and if I hadn’t read the synopsis of the story I probably would have got lost, so other than that it was great.

We got back to Robin’s Nest at around 11 which was the latest night we had had these holiday so we were pooped and Jayne even slept in her clothes.

Day 14

Wednesday was an interesting day. Ivor and Cora took us to Cape Point for the day. We drove along the coast most of the time and the scenery was awesome.

We first stoped at mineral world where they tumble, polish and cut gemstones. There was heaps to buy and you could also go upstairs and see the whole process. We didn’t spend long there because we had a booking for lunch and we still had to see the light house.

We got to cape point at around 12 and headed straight up to see the light house. It was a fair walk and steep so it took us a good 20minute to get up there so we could only spend 5 minutes up there because we still had to get down. It took us a bit longer to get down and we were 20 minutes late for our booking but they didn’t mind.

Now starts the interesting part. As some of you may know I have a minor allergy to mushrooms, pistachios and cashews so that if I eat them I get sick (throw up). Well I ordered some basil, spinach and feta stuffed chick and after eating it for a bit I started to feel a bit funny, so i asked whether there was any nuts or mushrooms in it and the waitress said there wasn’t so I kept eating it but then I started to feel worse so I stopped eating it.

I asked for a glass of water so I could take my tablet to stop me from being sick but she took ages and I was feeling worse and worse so by the time I took the tablet it was too late to do anything. I waited for half an hour to be sick, because I knew I would, and it wasn’t until we gave up and decided go that I was actually sick.

I know this sounds weird, but I don’t think i had ever been so happy to throw up, plus I got some cheesecake out of it :P .

We got back to Robin’s Nest around 4 and I started cooking dinner. After our delicious speedboats (basically sausages with vegies) and some cheesecake, we hit the hay.

Day 13

Tuesday we climbed Table Mountain. Well, not really, we took the cable car up to the top and walk around up top.

At the start of the walk there were these really cute animals called Dassies lying on the rocks. They looked dead until they moved and there was some really cute baby ones.

We walked for about 3 hours and in that time I grazed my knees, we took a “short cut” through mud and chin high spiky reeds that stabbed my grazed knees and got more sun burnt then I would have liked. The views were great up there though.

When we stopped for a snack, a little birdy came up really close to us and started going underneath our legs and eating our crumbs, which was really cool. It even ate some straight out of Jayne’s hand!

When we were finished walking around, we got back in the cable car and went down to the bottom station. We went and had lunch at Ivor and Cora’s and then went back to Robin’s Nest for a rest, or in Jayne and my case, a swim.

Around 4.30 we went to the St John’s Wynberg cemetery to look for some of our family’s graves. We found 5, one had Haddie and Fredrick Dowthwaite and their mother Margaret, and another had Metabel and Charles Dowthwaite, their daughter Evelyn and twins Maggie and Ernest, the 3rd grave had John and Florence Dowthwaite. Robert George Dowthwaite had a grave to himself and the last was my Great-grandfather Charles Gordon Dowthwaite with his first wife Irene.

See the thing is the only ones that actually died at the same time was Metabel and her twins who all died in child birth, the rest all died at different times and were just added to their family’s grave. I found one family that had 10 people in the one grave!

We spent an hour there and then went back over to Ivor and Cora’s for diner and crashed when we got home.

Saturday 3 December 2011

Day 12 - Cape Town

Monday we flew to Cape Town, this time with South African Airways. Jen picked us up and we were at the airport at 10.30.

We checked in and walked down to our terminal and got there 5 minutes before we were meant to board and then an announcement went over to tell us that there was a 30 minute delay, so we had to wait around for another half an hour before being bussed to the plane.

Because the flight was delayed before boarding, they took a short cut, so instead of the flight being 2 hours; it was 1½ hours, which was good. We landed at 2.00 and walked for ages from the arrival terminal to the rental car pickup.

Once we got out of the airport we drove to Ivor and Cora’s house. Cora is Grandad’s closest cousin. We had some afternoon tea and they gave us a list of things they had planned for us to do this week.

Around 3.30 we went to Robin’s Nest where we were staying for the week. It was really nice; there was a pool and a wood BBQ.

After unpacking and having a bit of a rest, we went back to Ivor and Cora’s for dinner, which was delicious. We stayed there until about 9 and got straight into bed when we got back to Robin’s Nest.

Day 11

Sunday we spent the day at Gold Reef City. It’s a theme park in Johannesburg at the site of an old gold mine.

We rocked up, ready to go, and then we were told that most of the power was out. By that I mean, they had enough power for some of the little kiddy rides and to go down the mine, but not enough for credit card machines or any of the thrill rides.

We went and did the mine tour first, hoping that by the time we had finished, the power would be back on and most of the rides would be working. The tour was good, we went down the mine shaft to level 5 which is 233 meters down.

We came out and all the power was back on, but a lot of the rides were under maintenance before the holidays. We went on a few rides; the best I thought was the golden loop.

We also did this 4D ride which was awesome. It was a 3D movie except the chairs moved and air blowed down my neck.

The last ride we went on was the anaconda. We were in line for over an hour! The ride was great but not quite worth the wait. After we finally got off the ride we got a soft serve and headed back to Jen’s.

After leftovers for diner we went back to the 9inObservatory to sort out what to take to Cape Town and hit the sack.

Day 10

Saturday was a quiet day, the first quiet day of our holidays. We slept in till 6.30, which was good because we’d been walking up around 5ish every morning. We sorted out what had to be washed and what was clean before Jen picked us up at 9.30.

We lazed around for about an hour and then TJ (Jen’s husband) took us to the transport museum. I was pretty cool and there were some weird cars like a car shaped like an orange or when the door is the front of the car. We went back to Jen’s and order pizza for lunch.

At 1.30 Jaylin, Jayne and I jumped in the back of their Ute with 2 of the 3 German Shepards and went to dog school. We were there for an hour, but that wasn’t the real fun.

It was when we were driving back to Jen’s, and we were all in the back again, and someone jump out in front of the car in front of us so we had to stop quickly and I hit my head on Jaylin’s knee. It was hilarious; we were laughing the rest of the way back.

We got back and about 30 minutes later we were in the car again to go to a BBQ with Jen’s brother and his family.

On the way there we dropped in on Margret and Hugh and had a quick afternoon tea with them. Margret is one of Grandad’s cousins.

The BBQ was good, everyone was talking together and the potato salad was really good! We got home around 8 and crashed.

Thursday 1 December 2011

Day 9

Friday was our last day in Zambia. To start the day we went to Livingstone Island which is an island on the edge of Victoria Falls.

We took a speed boat over there, in 2 groups, and walked to where we got changed in to our bathers. Then we swam out to devils pool, a pool right on the edge of the falls, using a rope to follow our guide. When we were on the rock we got the whole safety spiel and asked whether we wanted to jump or slide in.

Our group was first and we all decided to slide in considering we were right on the edge of Victoria Falls. We sat on the edge where there was a small ledge and had a group photo.

Then one by one our guide held us over the edge of the falls. It was really scary, but sooo amazing! All you could see was water cascading down the falls, below you and around you.

Once we had all had our turn at being held off the falls, we climbed out of the pool and swam back across to Livingstone Island for breakfast. We were given a scone, date muffin as well as eggs benedict (egg, bacon, tomato, lettuce and a massive scone/breakfast muffin) and tea.

After breakfast we took the boat back to the main land and drove back to the Waterfront. We finished packing and at 10.30 we were picked up and taken to the airport and waited to board our plane. The flight was almost 2 hours.

We got to Johannesburg around 2.00 and I was feeling sick because I almost had a full bag of biltong (like jerky) by myself plus I had been on the computer and the combination made me feel crap.

We got through everything smoothly, well they had to go look for dad’s chair, and we were met by a friend of dads, Paul VanEdgom.

We went TWR, the radio station where he works, and he gave us a small tour before went we out for an early dinner. Jayne and I shared a small platter because we were still full from breakfast and biltong.

After dinner he took us back to 9inObersevatory. Jayne and I had a swim in the pool while dad went out and brought some ice-cream and chocolate.

After our strawberry cheesecake ice-cream and Turkish delight chocy we hit the sack for a well needed sleep.

Day 8

Thursday we went to Chobe, Botswana. We had a quick breakfast at 7 before our 7.30 pickup. It took us about an hour to get to the Zambia border. After being stamped out of the country, we took a speed boat across the Zambezi River and got stamped into Botswana (our 10th stamp btw).

We were then driven to a hotel in Kasane where we started our cruise through the Chobe River. We saw heaps of Birds, too many Birds. We also saw some Hippos, Crocs, Water Monitor Lizards and Elephants.

After the cruise we had a buffet lunch and the food was delicious!

After lunch we went to the Chobe Game Park. We saw soooo many animals! Lots and lots of Elephants and Impala, including day/week old babies. We also saw a Spotted Hyena, Baboons, Hippos, Kudu, Mongooses, Squirrels, Buffalo, Cebu (watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gQXa9SgrtE) and a pride of lions. We spent about 2 and a half hours at the game park then we were driven back to the Botswana border, then back over to the Zambian border via boat.

On our way back to Waterfront our driver stopped next to a safari truck. It turns out there was a couple of white rhinos a couple a few hundred meters off the road and they said they would take us to see them. That was special considering there are only 7 white rhinos in Zambia.

We got back to the Waterfront at 5 and after dinner went straight to bed.

Day 7

Wednesday was a very busy day. We started of the day with a 15 minute flight, in a micro-light, over the Victoria Falls. The view was stunning! I also got to steer the micro-light for a bit which was awesome. After we had all finished our flights, we went back to the Waterfront for breakfast.

At 9.30 Herbert picked us and took us to the school that he and his wife had started in 2008 for preschool and lower primary school kids. The kids put on a show for us, showing dances from different provinces of Zambia, and then we all played together.

To start off with the kids were shy, but by the end of the 2 hours we spent there, they wouldn’t let go of us! They were all so cute and we didn’t want to go but they finish school at 12.30 and they still had some things to do so we went back to the Waterfront again for lunch.

After lunch we went for a horse ride. My horse was playing up so I didn’t enjoy it.

From the horse ride we went to the gorge swing. Jayne and I did a tandem swing and that was insane! We had to hold on to each other, as well as the rope attached to our harnesses, and shuffle backward of the platform. Then we fell!! Down, backwards, 50 metres in less than 3.5 seconds. Then the rope caught us and we swang.

I’m glad I did it with Jayne because I don’t think I would have done it by myself. Once we were on the ground and had taken our harnesses off, we started our walk up and out of the gorge. It took us about 15 minutes of steep climbing up rough stairs to get back to the top. When we got to the top, we found dad playing mancala with one of the guys there. He let dad win.

We got back to the Waterfront around 4.30 had a swim, ate and went to bed.

Thursday 24 November 2011

Day 6

I’ve been really tired the last few days, so I’ll this one tonight and catch up on the rest on the plane tomorrow.
On Tuesday we got picked up at 6.15 to go to Thorn Tree Lodge to go on an Elephant Back Tour. We we’re with 8 other people; 2 guys from Germany, a group of 5 from England and another lady from England. It was raining when we got there but it stopped before we started, plus they gave us all ponchos.
Jayne and I were on the same elephant. We went through water and we saw some crocs. The tour was for about an hour. They had been filming the whole ride and showed us the film they had made from it and it was really good, so we brought a copy.
We got back to waterfront just in time for the end of breakfast. Actually we were late, but they made breakfast for us anyway.  T
he activities centre organised a private driver for us and Herbert picked us up at about midday and drove us right to the Zimbabwe border, where we gained a few more stamps in our passports. We had to walk about 100 metres between the border and Victoria Falls.
The falls were amazing!! The water was pounding down the 94 metre cliff and the spray was wonderful. We spent about an hour walking around the falls before we went back to the entry to have a small lunch after a late breakfast.
We then took a taxi to a market. It was really intense. Every guy there was trying to sell you the exact same stuff, plus or minus some things, saying it was their own art. Dad brought a chair which he had been talking about trying to find and Jayne and I found this guy, Simba, that was really nice and we got a good deal of him. Once we had all the things we wanted and it was time to go, everyone came to us with a last chance deal to try and sell something, they were even trying to convince us through the taxi window.
We got back to the border, where we got a few more stamps in our passport, and Herbert met us on the other side and took us back to waterfront.
Well I’m buggered so I’ll do all the photo’s tomorrow aswell.

Tuesday 22 November 2011

Day 5 - Zambia

I didn’t want to stay up really late again last night after our cruise, so I’m doing yesterday’s post now and I’ll do todays later tonight.

Yesterday morning we were up at around 6 so we could be at the airport about two hours before our 10.10 flight. We had a small-ish breakfast before taking everything down to the car and leaving. It’ only took us about 25 minutes to get to the Europcar rental drop-off at the airport.

We walked up and down the airport a couple of times before we found our check-in gate because we thought it would be at the international end, seeing as we were flying to a different country, but it was at the domestic end because it was a budget airline and didn’t have many flights.

Our flight ended up taking off 30 minutes late. We were in a small plane and it had nothing, not even a radio. We ended up landing only 5 minutes later than our original time, so that was good.

We were then driving here, to the Waterfront Lodge, where we are staying until Friday. We had lunch, finished organising the rest of the activities we are doing this week and then Jayne and I went for a swim.

At 4.30 we went for a cruise on the Zambezi River. On board was three other people from Scotland and Canada, and we all got along well. We saw hippos, crocs and an elephant, and we also watched the sunset.

Well we’re off to now Zimbabwe so i don't have time to add photos, so I'll do that later.

Day 4

I was practically asleep when I posted Day 3, so I decided to do Day 4 (Sunday) today.

Well, at 6.30 in the morning we went for a game drive, in the back of a safari land rover, before breakfast. The first thing we saw was a worthog. Hakuna Matata! We also saw some impala, blesbok, zebra, buffalo and lots and lots of guinea fowl!

It was a really rough drive so my knees got a bit battered, but it was heaps of fun so I didn't mind.

Breakfast was in a room with heaps of "animals" in it. Jayne and I felt a little uncomfortable because of the hunting trophies, but breakfast was good. Just outside the breakfast room, a nyala was there with her baby. It was really cute!

We had to start taking our maleria tablets on Saturday because we have to take them 2 days before we go to Zambia, while we are there and for 4 weeks afterwards!!

Once we left Ingwe, we went back to the lion park to buy some more things and to have lunch. We had to take a detour because of a big bike race going on in Johannesburg. We shared a plate of chips for lunch because we were still full from breakfast. We also introduced our waiter to spiders, the drink kind. :)

From the lion park we took an other detour to Jen's house where I meet Jaylin for the first time. We had heaps of fun playing South Africa Trivial Pursuit. Jaylin knew a lot of the answers to the African related questions, but somehow Jayne won. We also jumped in the pool after the braai (BBQ).

When we left Jen's we came to the 9inObservatory where we stayed the night.

Off to Zambia today
BEC

Day 3

Saturday morning we had a massive breakfast!! I tried some chicken liver which tasted ok, but the texture was horrible! It was that bad that I don't even know how to describe it.

After my big 5 course breakfast, we went down to the little market thing they had there. I brought a couple of things for friends which I'm not going to mention. :P

Once we left Lesedi, we drove to Sterkfantein Caves. There we did a one hour tour through the caves and we had a really funny guide called Collen. The caves were really big, but to get out we had to slide on our bums at one stage. That was pretty fun.

From the caves, we went to Maropang. It was kinda a mini Science works/A-maze-n-things for fossils.
There was a mini water raft ride in there as well. Some of the thing at Maropang were really interesting.

After we finished lunch at Maropang we drove to Ingwe Bush Camp where we stayed the night.

Now to today

Day 2

Sorry about not posting for the last couple of days, but I had no internet access so I'll do a couple of posts. I'll start with Friday.

We went to the airport in the morning to pick up our hire car. We also brought a new sim card for dad's phone. After he got his phone working, he rang Jen who told us that our luggage was there to be picked up. Turns out it missed our connection in Sydney and went via Perth to get here. Dad was pretty happy about that.

From the airport we drove to the Lion Park where we drove around to see the animals. We saw some zebras, lions, cheetah and African wild dogs. Once we finished driving around we went into the cub world where we got to pat lion cub! We also got to hug a giraffe.

Then we drove to Lesedi Cultural Village where we spent the night. At about 4.30 we were taken on a tour around the villages. It was very interesting. After the tour we were giving a show with heaps of different dances from different tribes. Then we had a feast!! I tried some croc meat and ostrich meat. They both tasted pretty good.

Now to Saturday.

We're finally here

Hi everyone,I'm now sitting at an amazing guest lodge in Johannesburg, waiting for my sweet and sour chicken.
We got of the plane at about 3.20 South Africa time, which is almost midnight Melbourne time. We went to pick up our bags at the conveyor belts and our big suitcase was out pretty much straight away, but we waited and waited for our bag with most of dad's clothes in it, but it didn't come. Basicaly they lost our bag, but it should be here within the next couple of days....hopefully!
Anyway, we came out of the terminal and there was a really nice guy waiting for us and he drove us to this guest lodge. Jayne and I practicly got straight in the pool.
It's now 7pm and as soon as we finish dinner, I'm going to crash!
Talk to you later

Last night in australia.

Hey,
I'm now at the hotel for my last night in Australia for 3 weeks.
Took us about 45 minutes to find some where to have dinner that wasn't macca's, which led to me missing out on all but the last 5 minutes of Glee! Grrrr.
We have to be up by 6 tomorrow so we can get the 6.30 bus to the air port. Easy as pie.
One thing I'm intrested about is how good is the food going to be tomorrow. We're probably going to get about 4 planes meals, and aparently we get a menu. :P
Well next time I post, I'll be in Johannesburg, South Africa!
Signing off.

2 nights till the flight

Hi again,
I'm getting really excited about our trip now. Tomorrow night we're driving up to Melbourne to stay there overnight so we can catch our 7.30 flight and not have to wake up at 4.00.
We are completely packed having debugged our Zambia clothes on Saturday. I'm surprised how little i'm taking.See usually i fill my suitcase myself for a 10 day trip to Sydney, but for Africa we have my clothes plus Jayne's, with space left, and that's including 3 pairs of sandals!
Tonight is our last night with Mum before we leave, so we're going to have a mini party with pavlova. mmmmm yummy.
That's it for now

Not Long To Go

Hey everyone
The reality of the fact that we're going to Africa is really starting to excite me.
We're starting to work out what we're going to pack now, especially what we're taking to Zambia. Because of all the mosquito's in Zambia, the clothes we're going to wear there has to be soaked in this stuff called Debugger before we go. I hope it doesn't stink.
I'm not sure what to take to wear when  I'm on the elephant back tour (we ride elephants) because i can't wear skirts or short shorts which is what I'm wear for most of the trip, but it's going to be too hot to wear jeans or thin trackies and i need to figure it out soon because we need to Debugger it.
I brought my new, and first, camera on Friday. It's a Fujifilm Finepix s4000. It has a massive zoom so it's going to great for getting the lions in the distance. It's got so many settings it's not funny. It's even got a baby mode. It's awesome! :P
Chat soon.

10 days to go till we fly.
